Temple Isreal NYC

The synagogue community can trace it origins in New York back to the 1870s. In 1967, the community relocated to a distinctive Brutalist structure at 112 East 75th Street, designed by architect Peter Claman of Schuman & Lichtenstein.

In 2022 the congregation launched a $40 million capital campaign to undertake major renovations to the main sanctuary, the expansion of the chapel and the courtyard enclosure,. $28 million had been pledged by major benefactors at the time of the launch.

The architects were Beyer Blinder Belle.

The remit for the Luke Hughes team was to design and make the ceremonial furniture (torah stands, lecterns, chairs for presiders etc) on the bimah as well as the sanctuary seating for the congregation – prompting a new design of a stacking, linking chair for buildings of worship.

Temple Israel is proud to be a leader in defining a modern American Judaism which preserves the integrity and continuity of our tradition, even as it addresses the challenges of the next generation.
