Apex Cattle Market Theatre, Bury St Edmunds

Bury St Edmunds is one of England’s best preserved historic market towns, its mediaeval urban structure largely unspoilt. The Apex Cattle Market Theatre building was designed by Hopkins Architects who conceived of it as a modern ‘market hall’ that acts as a hub for local cultural activities, the building includes performance, conference and hospitality facilities.

The interior includes a multi-purpose performance space with a 500-seat auditorium, articulated as a freestanding brick box within the overall building block. This can be configured for various formats including theatre-style seating, ‘in-the-round’ or promenade performance. Dynamic floors and seating and screen walls give optimum flexibility to maximise the facilities’ potential for hire.

Luke Hughes Designs were commissioned in 2009 to design the seating - a milestone project within an extensive portfolio of auditorium furniture, which goes back more than thirty years.
