St George's Chapel Windsor

The Rutland Chantry is situated in the north transept of St George’s Chapel, Windsor. It was founded in 1481 by Thomas St Leger, and incorporates the 16th century tomb of his descendants, Anne St Ledger and her husband, the 11th Baron de Ros.

As part of the centenary celebrations for the Scout Association in 2005, the Dean and Chapter commissioned Luke Hughes to design and make liturgical furniture to enhance the chantry, now used for daily morning prayer.

The altar (in American black walnut with gilded details, carries the Latin inscription from the antiphon attributed to Paulinus of Aquileia in 796: ‘ubi caritas et amor deus ibi est’ (‘where there is love and charity, that is where God is’).

Other pieces, in English oak, included the credence table, prayer desks, pews, lighting and new mounting for the crucifix and a folding altar lectionary.
